PASSIA Roundtable on „Israeli Jerusalem Municipality – Policies and Practices towards Palestinians“
On March 22nd, PASSIA, a long-standing FES-partner, invited to a roundtable with Dr Meir Margalit in Jerusalem. Dr Margalit is a member of the Jerusalem Municipality for the Meretz party and a co-founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD). During the roundtable, Margalit talked about the policies and practices of the Jerusalem municipality towards the Palestinian inhabitants of Jerusalem, describing them as a “matrix of control”. As a member of the Jerusalem Municipality Dr Margalit was able to provide insight knowledge that is otherwise hardly accessible. He described as main tools of control zoning, planning and building restrictions posed upon the Arab inhabitants by Israeli authorities, as well as the neglect of infrastructural development and insufficient services in Palestinian neighbourhoods. His speech was followed by lively discussions.
