A democratic renewal process was initiated when Fatah held its 6th Party Congress in Bethlehem in August 2009. In addition to the members of the Central Committee, 128 members of the Revolutionary Council, parliament and controlling body of Fatah, were newly elected and appointed. Around 70 percent of its members are considered part of Fatah’s young generation. These members especially are expected to shape the role of the Revolutionary Council within the movement.
In light of this renewal process, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is committed to strengthening its ties with Fatah. On 8 December, Dr. Michael Bröning, director of FES Jerusalem office, met with Amin Maqbool, Secretary-General of the Revolutionary Council, in order to discuss future projects. Both can build on several successful projects in the past: since 2007 FES has supported Fatah in its process to transform from a liberation movement to a political party and together they conducted multiple seminars in Palestine and Germany concerning questions of management, leadership skills and professionalisation of parliamentary work. Furthermore, FES has been working closely with Fatah women for many years.
With regard to their friendly and constructive meeting Michael Bröning and Amin Maqbool are confident to have given way to an even closer cooperation in the future.
